Lepidochronological analysis in the mediterranean seagrass posidonia-oceanica state-of-the-art and future-developments ArchiMer
Pergentmartini, C; Pergent, G.
After blade shedding in the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, leaf sheaths remain attached to the rhizome and can persist for several decades within a ''matte'' They show, according to their insertion rank, cyclical variations in parameters such as thickness and tissue structure. These cycles are always annual, and may be influenced by environmental parameters such as light, temperature or water movement. The study of cyclic changes in Posidonia oceanica sheaths is thus a technique that can be used to investigate past changes in the near-shore environment. By analogy with dendrochronology, this study is termed lepidochronology. A number of applications of lepidochronological analysis have already been successfully tested : (i) Estimation of the growth rate and...

Preliminary data on the impact of fish farming facilities on Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Pergent, G; Mendez, S; Pergent-martini, C; Pasqualini, V.
While the extension of aquaculture along the coasts of the Mediterranean islands is today an economic priority, no data is available on the impact of these facilities on the littoral environment in general, and in particular on the Posidonia oceanica meadows that are responsible for the richness and diversity of these biotopes. The impact of fish farming facilities in the marine littoral environment is assessed at three Mediterranean sites in Corsica and Sardinia. Various parameters are considered: (i) the amount of light available, (ii) the nature of the sediment, and (iii) the vitality of the Posidonia oceanica beds. The findings confirm the impact of the aquaculture facilities within the water column (increase in turbidity, enrichment of the sediment in...

Temporal and spatial changes of seagrass meadows in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon ArchiMer
Agostini, S; Marchand, B; Pergent, G.
Aerial photographs and in situ data of the Urbinu Lagoon (one of the largest and deepest ponds in Corsica, Mediterranean Sea) permit the establishment of a cartography of its aquatic benthic assemblages and types of sea-beds. It was possible to distinguish in the photographs submerged structures such as: sand, pebbles, mud and seagrass meadows. Seagrass beds were the predominant vegetation type in this lagoon (comprising 14-29% of the total area depending on the year studied), and their distribution was incorporated into a geographical information database, and then compared with historical data. Temporal and spatial change in seagrass meadows was assessed between 1990 and 1997. Change in total extent was evaluated through a map to map comparison of data...

Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline; Pergent, G; Kantin, Roger; Pergent Martini, C; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the...
